CAN A BUILDING BE ICONIC, CONTEXTUAL AND BLEND WITH THE LANDSCAPE SIMULTANEOUSLY?
The existing site of the proposed visitor centre is an L shaped piece of land which includes three existing buildings surrounded by mature trees and the riverside pathway. Rather than build a single large building near the road, [Y/N] Studio proposed a cluster of new and refurbished buildings which provide the required facilities and encourage a greater connection with the landscape. Two new buildings house a cafe and flexible exhibition/teaching space and associated ancillary spaces. The buildings can work independently or together offering flexibility to suit the varying seasonal demands of the centre. The new buildings have their roof lines extended to connect them to the landscape and each other. Stepped seating at each end of the new buildings provides outdoor teaching facilities and panoramic views over the landscape. A covered central area forms a gateway to a natural biodiverse trail to encourage learning while exploring nature.
