CAN A BUILDING BE ICONIC, CONTEXTUAL AND BLEND WITH THE LANDSCAPE SIMULTANEOUSLY?
The existing site of the proposed visitor centre is an L shaped piece of land which includes three existing buildings surrounded by mature trees and the riverside pathway. Rather than build a single large building near the road, [Y/N] Studio proposed a cluster of new and refurbished buildings which provide the required facilities and encourage a greater connection with the landscape.

CAN A MATURE TREE DEFINE A COMMUNITY AND ITS ARCHITECTURE?
As part of a larger masterplan [Y/N] studio have designed a nursery and community centre which respects and celebrates a very large existing mature tree and the site’s history.
The entrance and community space at ground floor is designed around the extents of the site and the limitations of a large tree root protection zone. At first and second floor the nursery classes step back to create secure play spaces with views towards the tree and nearby parkland. The building is to be clad in relfective perforate aluminium mesh and softened with treated timber windows.

CAN A SINGLE ROLL OF PLASTIC REDEFINE A STATIC FASHION SHOW?
Typically static fashion shows are less dynamic than catwalk events with observers finding their own path through gallery style spaces potentially missing the best views of the work.
For the Blow Presents Live exhibition for London Fashion Week [Y/N] Studio asked whether this could be re-considered and improved. The introduction of a continuous ribbon of mirrored fabric transforms the space and presents a more defined path to visitors. Ceiling mounted elements offer new and unusual views down on the garments while curved backdrops manipulate and exaggerate details making them visible from across the room.

CAN YOU WEAR A BUILDING?
In collaboration with Fashion Designer Jane Bowler, [Y/N] Studio proposed a temporary pavilion for the European Capital of Culture 2012, Guimarães, Portugal. The proposal aimed to bridge the gap between the exclusivity of couture fashion and the accessibility of public art/architecture.As visitors ‘dress up’ in the colourful recycled fringing that adorns the monolithic structure, their friends are encouraged to watch through eye holes and take photographs. Walkways formed in modern prefabricated cross structural timber create public promenades/benches/tables during the day and a catwalk/seminar space during the evening.
